StandWithUs Canada Applauds Defeat of BDS at University of Ottawa

(Ottawa, ON, March 13, 2018) - StandWithUs Canada congratulates students at the University of Ottawa (UO) for voting down a motion supporting discriminatory boycotts against Israel at the Student Federation (SFUO General Assembly). The motion was defeated with a vote of 241 in favour, 231 against, which failed to achieve the required two-thirds majority to pass.

"These campaigns of hate have no place on campus", said Canadian Campus Director, Zina Rakhamilova.

"This motion only served to deepen divisions and stifle the free exchange of ideas, while doing nothing to advance meaningful dialogue on the conflict. I'm proud of the students who stood up for justice and said no to hate at their university.

The motion, titled "Motion to Endorse BDS", demonized and dehumanized Israelis, slandering them with claims of 'apartheid' and 'colonisation'. This rhetoric is part of a wider effort to deny the history, identity, and rights of the Jewish people in their ancestral homeland. The motion also called for academic boycotts, which have been widely condemned as violations of academic freedom.

We congratulate Hillel Ottawa, the Chabad Student Network, and all of the students who came together against hate at UO. We will continue to work with the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs (CIJA), the Canadian Jewish Political Affairs Committee, and Hasbara Fellowships to empower student activism at UO and across Canada.
