StandWithUs Urges Further Action By Stanford to Protect Student Rights

(Stanford, CA, August 7, 2018) StandWithUs is deeply concerned about Stanford University's response to a physical threat made by a Resident Assistant (RA) against "Zionists" on campus. Although the student resigned on August 3 from his position as an RA, the administration did not directly condemn his rhetoric and took far too long to state that threats of violence have no place at the university.

"Stanford should have immediately and unambiguously condemned this threat against Jewish students and others who believe in Israel's right to exist. They must also make clear that any further threats by this student will result in expulsion," said Roz Rothstein, CEO of StandWithUs. "Zionist students must have their rights protected on campus, just like all other students.”

In light of this incident and many others that have taken place at Stanford in recent years, we urge the administration to adopt a policy similar to the University of California Principles Against Intolerance. The Principles are a model for how universities across the country can ensure a safe learning environment for students while preserving academic freedom.

"It will take much more than a delayed, indirect statement to address this issue. Stanford must take concrete action to protect student rights," concluded Rothstein.
