Free Gilad Shalit
On June 25, 2006, IDF Corporal Gilad Shalit was abducted by Hamas militants in a cross-border raid via underground tunnels near the Israel-Gaza border. Over the next five years, Shalit was held in an undisclosed location -- presumably in an underground bunker -- under unknown conditions and with no contact with the outside world, international humanitarian organizations, or the press. During his time in captivity, StandWithUs was at the forefront of mobilizing communities worldwide to call for Shalit’s release and call upon members of the international community -- including the United Nations, the International Red Cross, and world powers -- to pressure Hamas to provide Shalit with humanitarian relief and for his immediate release. As part of this initiative, StandWithUs organized rallies in major cities across North America, created print and web resources, mobilized community members and college students, and called for an international solidarity day with Shalit on June 25, 2010. StandWithUs worked with Gilad’s father, Noam, to produce a YouTube video for Gilad’s 25th birthday that occurred while he was in captivity and to call attention to his harsh imprisonment under Hamas in Gaza.

Shalit was subsequently released through a prisoner exchange agreement between Israel and Hamas on October 18, 2011, after five years in isolation and captivity under Hamas in the Gaza Strip.
