Cast Lead - War Room
Between January 2001 and December 2008, terrorists in Gaza fired 8,165 rockets and mortars at civilian communities in southern Israel. In addition, Hamas was known to use human shields by embedding its infrastructure in schools, hospitals, and apartment buildings. In response, Israel launched Operation Cast Lead in order to stem the rocket and mortar fire from the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip.

At the outbreak of Operation Cast Lead, which took place from December 2008 to January 2009, StandWithUs immediately mobilized community members, students, and activists worldwide to counter the resulting PR assault on Israel by defending Israelís image in the media, online, and in social media outlets. Our staff in Israel set up a situation room housed at the IDC Herzliya campus, which became the heart of this initiative, where students and community activists worked around the clock to defend Israelís image and set the record straight in the media about the true events related to Operation Cast Lead. StandWithUs produced fact sheets, brochures, and online resources to inform the public about Israelís defensive operation. Rallies and demonstrations were held in cities around the world, including Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, Houston, and Seattle.

In the aftermath of the operation, StandWithUs was at the forefront of worldwide condemnation of the United Nationsí Goldstone report, which blamed Israel for waging the operation unjustifiably and accusing Israel of war crimes. After numerous international investigations and inquiries into the report, South African author Judge Richard Goldstone revoked his assessment of Israelís alleged war crimes due to evidence that was not made available by Israeli authorizes immediately following the operation.
