STANDWITHUS EMERSON FELLOWSHIP ENTERS ITS SIXTH YEAR WITH A RECORD NUMBER OF STUDENTS
THE STANDWITHUS EMERSON FELLOWSHIP ENTERS ITS SIXTH YEAR WITH A RECORD NUMBER OF STUDENTS PREPARED TO EDUCATE ABOUT ISRAEL ON THEIR CAMPUSES

(Los Angeles, CA) -- A record fifty student leaders from fifty campuses across the United States and Canada were selected to be StandWithUs Emerson Fellows as the unique campus initiative enters its sixth year. The students were selected from among hundreds of applicants for the prestigious Fellowship which trains them to organize Israel education events and to counter anti-Israel rhetoric on their campuses. The Fellowship is funded by philanthropists Rita and Steve Emerson of Los Angeles.

The students began their Fellowship with an August conference in Los Angeles, geared towards training them as StandWithUs Emerson Fellows. Through workshops and lectures by campus and other key StandWithUs staff, they learned skills and facts to help them clarify Israelís image and respond effectively to anti-Israel actions and stereotypes. They learned coalition building, event planning and received media training.

This year, StandWithUs unveiled 3 new campus campaigns that students can utilize throughout the year. "Peace Takes Two" which debuted successfully last year has been expanded with additional programming. This includes the "Path to Peace," a colorful 16-panel display. Each panel is 7 feet high, and collectively tell Israelís story through photographs and basic facts. Students across the country proactively used the display last year to educate and inspire their peers and as a counter to anti-Israel campaigns such as "Israel Apartheid Week." The overall goal of "Peace Takes Two" is to educate about Israel's quest for peace and the reasons for the failure in the process.

"Israel in the World" is designed for coalition building with campus groups, to engage students and educate about Israel's contributions to the world. Multi-faceted, it focuses on specific countries and their relationship to Israel such as India and China, or looks at Israel's business achievements. Another campaign, I   Israel utilizes social media and short video entries where students talk about what Israel means to them.

"The SWU campus staff consistently solicits feedback from our students about what works and what doesn't, and has developed these campaigns with their input. They were refined during the August training seminar and students will adapt them to their respective campus environment as the semester progresses. We're very excited that these programs will have a wide appeal that will educate and help build coalitions," stated Brett Cohen, StandWithUs National Campus Programs Director.

"We are very grateful to Steve and Rita Emerson for expanding the program. Clearly, the more SWU Emerson Fellows we have, the more campuses we can cover, the more Israel activities we can plan, and the more students we can educate. We choose campuses that are known for being troubled by anti-Israel sentiment. The Emerson's are our 'eyes and ears' and keep us informed of anti-Israel actions, such as the Divestment campaigns, and they find opportunities for proactive education. When there is a problem on a campus, we mobilize into action and work with the Fellows to formulate effective responses," remarked Roz Rothstein, CEO StandWithUs.

ďEvery year the number of applications rises. These are student leaders with proven track records, abilities and passion and the selection of Emerson Fellows is not always easy. We're thrilled that Steve and Rita Emerson expanded the program, and of course, we look to grow the program each year," notes Ron Kutas, StandWithUs Emerson Fellowship Director.

Forty students from U.S. and Canadian campuses participated in the five previous SWU Emerson Fellowships. They brought speakers to their campuses, screened films, organized conferences, distributed StandWithUs materials and responded to anti-Israel events and rhetoric as needed.
