Education does not appear to be the road to peace at Essex University

StandWithUs UK is appalled that the actions of violent demonstrators on Essex University Campus forced the Deputy Ambassador of Israel to abandon his invited visit and to be evacuated for his own safety when the demonstrations, which had the backing of the Student Union to its great shame, went out of control.

This is no way to behave on a university campus and contravenes all principles of free speech and decent behaviour.  Just because Essex Student Union has adopted a series of anti Israel policies does not give them the right to show such disrespect and to disrupt a scheduled meeting that had been arranged by invitation.

It is to be hoped the University authorities will take the strongest possible action against any identified perpetrators of this demonstration which can only serve  to have brought Essex University into serious disrepute.

Disciplinary action should certainly be taken against Nathan Bolton, president of the student union, who had supported the university’s Palestine Solidarity Group and the Socialist Worker Student Society in calling for Mr Roth-Snir to be banned from the campus.  Mr Bolton said the invitation “beggared belief” because of what he said were Israel’s apartheid policies against Palestinians. The student union boycotts Israeli goods and is officially linked to the international boycott, divestment and sanctions movement.

After the deputy ambassador was forced to flee, Mr Bolton tweeted that it had been “a great day – free Palestine!”    He should be declared unfit to hold office on campus.
