Hen Mazzig, the StandWithUs Director of Israel Education, spoke at YULA on Wednesday. He discussed his role in the army assisting Palestinian civilians with their day to day needs, and assisting international NGO workers in their work in Judea and Samaria. The energetic Hen told the students about how one day when he was a young boy he was on his way to the ice-cream shop, and nearly lost his life when the shop where he was headed blew up seconds before he arrived in a suicide bombing. He described how he understood what Israel was about when his mother, instead telling him to hate those who committed the crime, focused on the fact that he had survived. "Israel focuses on life and not on hate." Which is why the army on the one hand protects the borders and on the other hand makes every effort to spare civilians. Another story he told was of a little Arab boy only 6 years old who had lost his mother and was orphaned. They knew about this boy wandering alone in Gaza and found that he had an uncle in Judea and Samaria and arranged for him to adopt the boy. In the early hours of the morning they opened the border crossing they brought the homeless 6 year old out of Gaza and to safety with his uncle in Judea and Samaria. Students asked a lot of questions about his work in the IDF and about the growing tensions and anti-Semitism at university campuses today. It was a very straightforward talk discussing the complexity of the Arab-Israeli conflict. The feedback from students was very positive. They appreciated the frank discussion and the honest answers to difficult questions. Please click here for an inspiring Ted Talk that Hen gave.
