StandWithUs supports Israel's pursuit of $250 billion in compensation for  Jewish Refugees from Arab countries

(Los Angeles, California - January 6, 2019) - - StandWithUs unequivocally supports Israel's decision to formally pursue $250 billion in compensation for Jews dispossessed in seven Arab countries and Iran. This demand is an important step towards justice for the nearly one million Jews who were ethnically cleansed from Arab countries and Iran in the aftermath of the first Arab-Israeli war in 1948.

“When the question of refugees is raised within the context of the Arab-Israeli conflict, people often only think of Palestinian refugees. The Jews displaced from Arab countries are the 'forgotten refugees' of this conflict. The history and rights of Jewish refugees must be finally be recognized. Although they were ultimately absorbed in Israel and  Western nations, the injustice they suffered must be addressed. They were displaced, and their vibrant, rich cultures were deliberately destroyed. The demand by Israel that these refugees and their descendants be compensated by seven Arab governments and Iran is both just and long overdue,” said Roz Rothstein, CEO and Co-Founder of StandWithUs.

These Mizrahi (Eastern) Jewish communities, some of which were thousands of years old, produced some of Judaism's most influential and revered rabbis, scholars, and leaders. Today virtually no Jews remain in those countries. They faced brutal oppression and 99% were ultimately pushed out by various governments, partly inspired by the promotion of violence and anti-Semitism of Palestinian leader Haj Amin Al-Husseini.

Before, during and after 1948 Arab governments began a systematic anti-Semitic campaign against their Jewish citizens. These policies included stripping Jews of their citizenship, arbitrary arrests and detentions, riots that killed hundreds of Jews, restrictions on religious observance and freedom of movement, criminalization of Zionism, employment discrimination, freezing of assets and confiscation of both private and communal property.

Nearly all of the Jews living in Arab countries and Iran ultimately fled or were expelled, and many of them were forced to leave during the night and with only the clothes on their backs. In Iraq, for example, there were 150,000 Jews in 1948. Today none remain. Their suffering has only recently been recognized internationally, with leaders like Edwin Black spearheading a memorial day for the infamous "Farhud" massacre.

Most of the Mizrahi Jewish refugees went to Israel, where today they and their descendants make up just over half of Israel's Jewish population.
