FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Boston, MA -- December 21, 2020) -- StandWithUs condemns the passage of an antisemitic resolution at Tufts University, which scapegoats Israel and Jewish groups for police brutality in the United States. On November 24, it passed with a vote of 1725 in favor, 665 against, and 161 abstaining. On December 21, the Tufts Election Commission (ECOM) certified the results.
“We are proud of the students who stood up for their community and educated many of their peers about this antisemitic conspiracy theory, despite facing a referendum question that was heavily slanted in favor of the other side,” said Rena Nasar First, Executive Director of Campus Affairs at StandWithUs. “It is deeply disappointing and frightening that the voices of Tufts students will now be used to promote classic antisemitic slurs within a campaign of hate focused on Israel and Jews.” The ECOM certified these results despite acknowledging that the referendum violated the Tufts Community Union (TCU) constitution. This further demonstrates the lack of legitimacy in this vote. It was introduced by Tufts SJP. StandWithUs will continue to work with ICC, Hillel International, and all of our partners to support the Jewish and pro-Israel community at Tufts, as they fight bigotry and tell Israel’s story on campus.
