StandWithUs mourns the sudden loss of Sushma Swaraj, the first woman External Affairs Minister of India and a good friend. Swaraj, who served as chairwoman of the Indo-Israel Parliamentary Friendship Group from 2006 to 2009, valued the Israel-India relationship. In fact, in one of her first statements in office she said that India attaches “the highest importance” to the full development of ties with Israel, Swaraj, an ardent feminist and strong leader in a field dominated by men, looked to former Israeli PM Golda Meir for inspiration. Peggy Shapiro. Midwest Executive Director of StandWithUs expressed the sentiment of the organization, "We send our condolences to the government and people of India. May her memory be a blessing."
