Cover photo by Professor Irving Schild, who fled Belgium with his family in 1939. They ran from country to country to escape deportation by the Nazis. He was among 1,000 refugees selected to be brought to a refugee camp in Oswego, NY during the war. Serving in the U.S. Marine Corps, he trained to be a combat photographer and had a distinguished career, winning many awards. He chaired the Photography Department at FIT, and was the photographer for MAD Magazine for over 50 years.
Jewish Resilience and Creativity After October 7
On October 7, we will commemorate one year having passed since Hamas invaded southern Israel and murdered more than 1,000 civilians. During that bleak day in Jewish history, more than 300 Israelis were kidnapped into Gaza as hostages. Simultaneous to the war in Gaza, Israel is facing hostile enemies on six other fronts. Since October 7, more than 300 Israeli soldiers have been killed defending the Jewish state.
As the Holocaust Education Center at StandWithUs, we do not believe the events of October 7 stand in isolation from history. Much of the antisemitic incitement and propaganda used by Adolf Hitler to justify the Holocaust has also been deployed by Hamas in Gaza, as well as by Hezbollah in Lebanon and Syria. The enemies of Israel, led by Iran, are open and transparent about their intention to destroy the Jewish people of Israel.
In North America, Jewish students are facing unseen levels of antisemitism. On some university campuses, institutionalized antisemitism became so intense that Congress held national hearings. We believe Holocaust education can be a path for students of all backgrounds to understand and process the trauma of October 7 and intensifying antisemitism. As such, our seminars focus on resilience, self-agency, and creativity.
As we commemorate October 7, 2023, we pray for the return of the hostages and for peace.
